Pierre Messmer, Prime Minister from 1972 to 1974 and member of the Académie Française, became Chancellor of the Institut de France on January 1st, 1999. He succeeded Marcel Landowski, Chancellor from 1994 to 1999. Pierre Messmer initiated, in 2005, the ceremonial awarding of the Grand Prix from the Foundation of the Institut de France.
